Warm Weather, High Grass

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Now that the weather has warmed up here in Northeast Ga, the fescue grass has taken off. If we get good rains like we had while it was still cool, there will be a whole lot of mowers running around here. The Bermuda lawns are coming along but slowly.

Did you save some rain?

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

With all the rain we received in Northeast Georgia in the past month I wonder how much we saved for later. I have about 100 gallons we pulled from our pool cover but could have saved much more had I installed the gutter system to run into a bigger tank. That project is still in the works.

Real Estate Sales in Northeast Georgia

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

It amazes me how bad some properties look that people are trying to sell. Obviously some are forclosures which no one has incentive to clean up. But many are just normal places up for sell that wold have a better chance of selling if they looked better kept. Keeping the lawn mowed is an easy way to keep a home looking decent. Were I shopping for a house, I would never even stop at one that have 7 inch grass. It just turns shoppers off. Also pressure washing the home is an inexpensive way to make it more presentable. I would also suggest doing a video tour of your home to post online so shoppers can see without driving out. Your realtor might know of a service that does this to help you if you can’t do it yourself.  Little things here and there can make a difference especially in a slow real estate market.

Growing Fescue in Georgia

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

A big problem for homeowners is how to grow fescue. It is very difficult in the Georgia clay. Most of the time in newer homes, the back yard is left pretty bare while the front is sodded. This saves money for the home buyer but is a mess in the long run. The best thing to do is not just throw out some seed and hope for the best. You need to scratch up the soil with a small digger or a pull behind “rake type” tool, like old time farm tools. You just need to loosen the soil for the grass to have a chance. Also use starter fertilizer and of course water the seeds. Just remember it is a constant battle to keep the fescue going. You need to overseed every year and fertilize. If not it will thin out and be taken over by weeds.

Bermuda Slow in Georgia

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

I’ve noticed the Bermuda lawns are slow to green up this year. I guess it has been cooler longer than I realized. This season has been the latest I have ever started on Bermuda lawns. Of course the fescue has been growing for a while now.

Cut your own grass or hire

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

What is the price difference between paying someone to mow your lawn and doing it yourself? Very little in my opinion. 95% of my customers want full service (mow, trim, blow off), but I do offer a budget service for people who just want the grass cut and nothing else. This type service is as cheap as doing it yourself if you consider fuel, repairs, and not to mention your free time. Also you are only paying for the service for about 7 months out of the year so you have 5 months to save up for the mowing season. Obviously I am biased since I want everyone to use my service instead of doing it themselves. Well not everyone just all those within 10 miles of Maysville Georgia :)

Chasing Fire Ants

Monday, April 13th, 2009

There are products that help fight fire ants, but most people don’t use them properly. Instead they just treat each individual mound. You should treat your entire yard or at least as much as you can. It is more expensive but it is also effective. You get what you pay for!

Why Aerate?

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Aeration is a mystery for many people around Northeast Georgia. People wonder what aerating does exactly. Basically it pulls plugs of soil out of the lawn which allows air and rain to penetrate further down. This makes for a healthier lawn. I do my lawn twice a year and it really pays off.
