What Mower Should I Buy?

What mower should I buy? I see this question alot on lawn forums. Also homeowners like recomendations. I don’t want hammer any particular company. I’ll just relay personal experiences and what I hear from other lawn care operations.

The only commercial mower I had lots of trouble with was a Husqvarna. Spindles, poor bagging system, and other endless small problems. Supposedly their commercial mowers have improved and a company rep even acknowledge the problems I mentioned above on a lawn care forum we were on.

I have had 2 Dixie Choppers which I love. They are not the greatest on hills but that is the only negative aspect in my eyes. I had a Toro walk behind mower which was great but I needed a ztr more so I didn’t use it often. It left as good a cut as any mower I’ve seen.
As for a mower for homeowners I really don’t recomendations much in that realm as far as lawn tractors. They are not but to last in many cases. Lawn care service is so affordable I would use that if I were not in the business myself. If I were going to mow my own lawn I would try to find a used commercial mower. They will last lifetime for a homeowner if you take care of them. If you are bound and determined to buy a new non commercial mower I would still get a ztr. Steering wheels wear you out. Trust me I know.

Mower Junkyards

With so many lawn mowers sold every year I am surprised we don’t see giant mower junkyards like the ones for cars. I guess there is an online junkyard since many people sell their worn out mowers on craigslist and parts on eBay. So it is good that some mowers get recycled that way. If I were guessing I’d say the average life of a lawn tractor is about 3 to 4 years. That may increase as folks try to save money by keeping their cars, home, and other equipment maintained better. Some tips to keep your mower alive longer below.

1 change oil often
2 change and clean air filters
3 keep blades sharp
4 keep proper air pressure in tires
5 grease spindles and other grease points daily or before each use.

Mower Roll Over Protection

I’m all for mower safety but I am not a big fan of the roll over protection bars. Most of the ZTR mowers I see in north Georgia have roll bars. They can be lowered when not on a steep slope I know but still it is an aggravation sometimes. My Dixie Choppers do not have the roll bars and I am glad. If you leave steep slopes for the weed eater you won’t need Roll over protection.
Probably the main reason mower manufacturers put them on mowers is guys like this….

Idiot on Lawn Mower

The title says it all. Lawn mowers are dangerous. I know I sound like an old man worrying. But you can get seriously hurt.

Lawn Mowers ‘injure thousands every year’

BBC News – Ride-on lawnmowers ‘injure thousands every year’.

Some good stats in the article above. I see people all the time with young kids in their lap while mowing. Really not a good idea. The worst thing i ever saw was a little kid, maybe 5, riding on the back bottom of a mower. His feet were on a hitch and he was holding the seat. It is difficult to fathom what the Dad was thinking.http://www.guzer.com/pictures/redneck-riding-mower.jpg

The economics of lawn mowers – CommerceNewsTODAY

The economics of lawn mowers – CommerceNewsTODAY.

Truly push mowers are a rare site except in fenced backyards. But before long the lawn tractor will be just as rare. The zero turn mowers will be the norm once prices dip just a few dollars more. They are faster, more efficient because of the turning, and easier on your body. A steering wheel causes stress on the arms and shoulders on a big yard.

Careful Adding Mower Fuel

For the first time ever I put some 2 cycle oil mixed gas in my mower which takes straight gas. I googled up some info to see if it would hurt the engine and all the data I got said that it would be fine. So since I could not siphon the gas out and the little pump I bought did not work, I just ran it after filling up with the correct fuel. It ran fine and I have had no issue with it so far since.

Just be careful when adding fuel to your equipment. It is easy to get in a hurry and make a mistake. Adding regular gas to a engine requiring oil mixed fuel IS a PROBLEM.

Video on Organic Lawn Fertilizers

The guy over at safelawns.org has a good video up that shows how to make organic fertilizer. There are several on the link above. The specific one about organic tea is very good. It shows the easy but time consuming process of making your own lawn fertilizer. You need a compost pile and small gadgets (optional) and a manual sprinkler (optional). You also need some free time. The organic movement in lawns is cool but make no mistake. It is not as easy as buying some fertilizer or paying a guy to fertilize for you.
