Growing Fescue in Georgia

A big problem for homeowners is how to grow fescue. It is very difficult in the Georgia clay. Most of the time in newer homes, the back yard is left pretty bare while the front is sodded. This saves money for the home buyer but is a mess in the long run. The best thing to do is not just throw out some seed and hope for the best. You need to scratch up the soil with a small digger or a pull behind “rake type” tool, like old time farm tools. You just need to loosen the soil for the grass to have a chance. Also use starter fertilizer and of course water the seeds. Just remember it is a constant battle to keep the fescue going. You need to overseed every year and fertilize. If not it will thin out and be taken over by weeds.
